Military Blolite Overview

NextGen/General Cable's involvement in Blolite® Blown Optical Fiber Technology (BOF) systems for U.S. Navy shipboard application is born out of our extensive experience in military fiber optic cable development and with our original partners — British Telecom and Corning Inc. for blown fiber technology in the early 80's. In another partnership with Newport News Shipbuilding, a militarized version of commercial Blolite® BOF system was engineered and fully tested to all the requirements of MIL-PRF-85045 prior to being presented to the Navy for installation on the carrier U.S.S. Harry S. Truman (CVN75). With approval from the Navy, this first major installation on a military aircraft carrier began in late 1997 and was completed in March of 1998. The total amount of fiber deployed on this initial build was 47 miles.

Since that first experience there have been over 500 miles of military Blolite fiber installed on several other U.S. Navy ships including the carriers Enterprise (CVN65), Nimitz (CVN68), Eisenhower (CVN69), Carl Vinson (CVN70), George Washington (CVN73), John C. Stennis (CVN74), Ronald Reagan (CVN76) as well as the amphibious assault ships; Tarawa (LHA-1), Nassau (LHA-4) and Wasp (LHD-1).

The initial version of military Blolite deployed met all the requirements of the mil-specification with relation to crew safety and product performance. These products have now been fully qualified to those documents. Enhancements have continued to be made which include increased fiber density (now up to 12 fibers per tube up to 1000 feet), increased Multiduct cable tube count (up to 19 ducts), increased cable flexibility and development of tools, components and accessories to simplify the installation process.

Benefits in Shipboard Applications

  • Blolite installations and system upgrades in a military shipboard environment present extreme challenges. New fiber technology can be easily and cost effectively added to any surface ships that have BOF on board.

  • Blolite's installation equipment is designed to operate with standard low pressure compressed air simplifying the installation process while functioning in accordance with safety guidelines.

  • The Blolite BOF system allows the flexibility to install only the number of fibers required without unnecessary dark fibers.

  • The Blolite system meets flame, smoke and toxicity requirement of U.S. Navy optical fiber installations.

  • Blolite Multiduct cable utilizes an enhanced thermoset jacket system which offers superior performance throughout the life cycle of the system.

  • Blolite can accommodate physical layer network adds, moves and changes without the need for new cable installation.

  • Blolite installations due to failed nodes can be quickly reconfigured at sea or in dock.

  • Blolite BOF offers a permanent, future-proof infrastructure solution.
